EBSD detectors

Nordlys EBSD Dectector

An essential part of any EBSD analysis is the acquisition of high quality diffraction patterns. Sometimes the emphasis is on the speed of data acquisition, whilst at other times the data accuracy is paramount. With this in mind, we have developed a fast and versatile detector, Nordlys, to suit all types of EBSD analyses.

  • Sensitive Detector : NordlysS
  • Fast Detector : NordlysF+
  • Fore-scatter detector (FSD)

Building upon technology that has kept the Nordlys II detector at the forefront of speed, sensitivity and SEM compatibility, NordlysF+ now achieves indexed mapping speeds of at least 600Hz (points per second)!

NordlysF+ not only has high speed above 600Hz, which is ideal for all dynamic studies, such as in-situ tensile experiments, but also an infra-red (IR) filter suited for heating experiments.

The NordlysF+ permits indexed mapping speeds of at least 600Hz, depending on the SEM’s ability to deliver about 12nA of probe current.  98% indexing was achieved on a test sample.

Unlike conventional EBSD detectors, the new NordlysF+ detector does not require a special high temperature phosphor screen during heating experiments.  This is because the IR filter blocks only near the IR range without blocking EBSD signal and therefore does not have the drawbacks imposed by a conventional phosphor screen with aluminium coating.

Forescatter detectors enable forescatter imaging - a powerful imaging technique that can reveal the grain and subgrain structure of your samples when they are tilted into the EBSD geometry. Not only does this provide a quick overview of the microstructure, it can also reveal features that may otherwise be hard to see, such as the strain around dislocations in thin films, or intra-granular deformation in deformed samples.

The flexibility of the Nordlys II forescatter detector (FSD) system is unique: up to 6 diodes can be fitted around the phosphor screen. In this configuration, the top 2 diodes provide a z-contrast signal for phase imaging (as shown in the lower image to the left, taken of a polyphase rock sample), whereas the lower and side diodes reveal orientation contrast (lower image to the right, showing grains and some intragranular deformation). Each diode can be fitted or detached separately: this allows you to choose the ideal set-up for your system, or even to retrofit or upgrade the FSD system at a later date.
